"SPECIAL DELIVERIES" FOR NEWBORN AND INFANT CARE

With the implementation of managed care, prenatal patients and new mothers are treated or observed within the home setting rather than undergoing prolonged hospital stays. Our Special Deliveries division of New York Health Care can handle almost any prenatal or postnatal eventuality. Our nurses are licensed and registered with a minimum of 2-3 years experience in the high-risk obstetrical or maternal newborn field.

NEW MOTHERS AND BABIES ARE IMPORTANT TO US

At Special Deliveries we are acutely aware of our responsibility at this critical juncture in a new mother's or newborn baby's life. Our nurses are Registered Perinatal nurses, Newborn Intensive Care Unit nurses, Maternal/Newborn Registered nurses, Certified Childbirth Education and Certified Lactation Consultants.

COMPLICATIONS ARE COMPLEX
With gestational diabetes or pregnancy induced hypertension, the pregnant woman and her baby are at high risk for preterm labor and postpartum infections. NYHC nurses provide instruction and monitoring on a daily basis when necessary to the patient. Warm and supportive caregivers alleviate worry and distress in patients by being a reassuring and knowledgeable presence.

The at-risk patient is taught strategies by perinatal nurses to recognize a preterm labor pattern. This helps prevent hospitalization and preterm delivery. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, our nurses support and educate, with daily nursing visits and telephone calls. The pregnancy is given the best chance to be maintained for full-term.

Phototherapy

It's upsetting for a new mother to leave the hospital without her baby. Until recently, the all-important maternal bonding was disrupted by Neonatal jaundice which necessitated prolonged hospitalization. Now it can be treated safely and effectively in the home environment. NYHC nurses will coordinate the physician's plan of treatment. They will also instruct the family on the infant's care, including operation of the phototherapy equipment which we will deliver and set up. Daily blood specimen withdrawals will be sent to a lab for bilirubin level testing.
